since i'm due to start in my new post next week, i dropped by watsons to add more make-up to my collection.  good thing maybelline and l'oreal were on sale that day.  i have actually psyched myself to purchase from revlon, but when i saw the two former brands were on sale, i suddenly changed my mind and tried l'oreal.  hey, i'm a girl!  i can be fickle-minded. *wink*

i only bought a few items as i didn't allot a very big budget for them.  and make-up as we all know it costs a lot.  =(

Cervical Cancer Vaccine Advice from GlaxoSmithKline

i read these from the leaflet i got from my OB-Gyne after i had my cervical cancer vaccination (cervarix).  i thought it would be nice to share it to you my readers.  this is by the way, given out for free by glaxosmithkline and the cervical cancer prevention network - philippine general hospital.

what is cervical cancer?
it is a cancer in the cervix, which is located in the lower part of the womb and connects to the vagina.  it is caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV).  of the 15 cancer-causing or high-risk HPV types, HPV 16 and 18 account for majority of cervical cancer cases, up to 70%.

what is the cervical cancer vaccine and how effective is it?
the cervical cancer vaccine cervarix prevents infection with HPV 16 and 18, the 2 HPV types most commonly associated with cervical cancer.  clinical trial data also show that is also demonstrates additional protection against 12 other cancer-causing types of HPV.

how many doses of the vaccine should i receive?
three (3) doses are needed over a period of six (6) months.  it is best that you complete the series to get the full benefit of the vaccine.

is a pap smear required before getting vaccinated?
cervical screening or a pap smear is not required.  however, pap smear shouldn't be stopped even after getting vaccinated.

who should received the vaccine?
this vaccine is recommended for females ten (10) years old and above.  it is ideally recommended before one becomes sexually active since the aim of the vaccine is to prevent HPV infection which is usually transmitted through genital contact.  the vaccine will not protect against an HPV infection already present in the cervix.  a woman who has undergone total hysterectomy (complete surgical removal of the uterus and cervix) may not benefit from cervical cancer vaccination.
the option of getting vaccinated may vary.  consult your doctor before getting vaccinated.

who should NOT receive the vaccine?
pregnant women and anyone trying to conceive within one month of getting a dose of the vaccine.

what are the common side-effects of the vaccine and what can i do to relieve them?
usual side-effects are pain, swelling and redness of the site of injection, which can last for 2-3 days.  some people may also develop fever.  taking paracetamol or anti-inflammatory drugs can help.  if allergic reactions are felt, consult your doctor immediately.

Removing Warts on Kids

we recently discovered our nearly 3yo son has a wart on his left ring finger.  it wasn't that big.  but we were still fearful that it could spread to other parts of his body.  so we immediately rushed him to his pediatric dermatologist, Dr Carlos Paguio, of The Medical City.

dr paguio mentioned it's pretty much common for kids to have warts once in their toddler years.  why?  because they're very 'touchy' at that stage, and they like feeling or touching a lot of things like books, crayons, toys, and what have you.  and sometimes, when these things aren't kept clean or have viruses that cause warts, the kids catch them.  poor baby!  so they commonly have them on their hands or feet.  i suggest you better check your kid's hands and feet for warts once in a while.  and keep them clean all the time.

so what was the doctor's remedy (WARNING:  remedies vary from doctor to doctor.  so please have your child's wart checked by his pedia-derma first and ask him if this remedy applies.)?

he made us buy the following:  duofilm wart solution (available at mercury drug), duct tape (any brand will do, but if you can afford 3M brand the better), and tegaderm transparent dressing (also availabe at mercury drug)

here are the steps:
1. soak hand (affected area) in warm water for at least 20 minutes
2. dry hand (affected area)
3. apply duofilm with toothpick (cut it coz you'll use flat end) 3x, dry by air blowing (you'll notice the wart will change color to cottony white and top cover will soften and seem to come off)
4. when completely dry, apply strip of duct tape
5. cover top of duct tape with tegaderm to keep it dry even while bathing
6. leave for 6 days, then have it checked again by his pedia.

in case your child accidentally peels off the cover and the wart is still there, you have to do the whole process again until you reach 6 days.

by the way, the materials you'll need aren't that cheap.  total bill was around P800.  but anything for your child right?  =)

It was definitely good to know that Mrs Philippines-Universe Maria Muriel Moral, from Camarines Norte, was awarded as Mrs Intelligence in this year's recently concluded Mrs Universe 2010 beauty pageant held in Lithuania.  This came after we found out of Miss Philippines-Universe Venus Raj's coronation as 4th Runner Up in the Miss Universe pageant held at Las Vegas, Nevada.

Ride E-Jeeps in QC for FREE

QC residents have another reason to rejoice. they still have until August 20, 2010 to avail themselves of this FREE electric-jeepney ride recently launched by their local goverment, as part of their Go Green Project.  each e-jeep, priced at PhP 625,000.00, can accommodate up to 14 persons.   charging time is from 8 - 10 hours for a 55 kilometer drive.

this was recommended by a tita of mine who now sports long curly locks.  her hair is so soft, shiny and manageable even with those curls.  i got envious as soon as i touched it!  though mine isn't curly, it's frizzy.  ugh!  i want it to be straighter, shinier.
